What is a Corporate Wellness Program?
A wellness program is an offering usually put in place by an employer or health insurance company with the intent to lower the incidence of high risk claims by keeping its participants well. Its focus is usually on weight loss and prevention of diabetes through information and support. The goal of the program is to educate and encourage the participants to make healthy choices. How does a Corporate Wellness Program save your company money? Properly implement wellness programs will save your company money in a number of ways. In the short term; by the reduction of sick days used by the participants, less time lost to “presenteeism”, and less turnover. A study done at The Children’s Hospital in Denver concluded that participants in the wellness program were 230% less likely to use extended illness benefits and turnover among wellness program participants was 10% less than turnover among non-participants. In the long term the health care cost of the company increase at a slower rate because there are fewer high cost claim resulting from fewer strokes, fewer heart attacks, fewer complications associated with poor management of diabetes. How effective is employee participation and does it offer a benefit for recruitment?
Properly implemented wellness programs attract approximately 50% of the people who are eligible at any given time. Cambium Wellness creates individual plans for each member of the client’s team using seven unique electronic platforms and telephonic coaching for those team members who prefer the live, one on one approach. We do so to have the ability to create in excess of 200 combinations to attract and maintain the interest of each participant. Is there a cost to employees to be involved? Usually not. The employer invests in wellness programs for the benefit of the company and often offers the employee an additional incentive to participate. That said, Cambium Wellness programs do offer options to the employee. For example: additional coaching time, and access to a virtual clinic. These upgrades are available to the employee at discounted rates. What do employees gain? There are a myriad of benefits for employees who participate in wellness programs besides the obvious better health. Participants also gain more self esteem and self efficacy by reaching objectives and goals set by the participant with the help of a coach. The corporate culture changes when a properly implemented program is in place. Work becomes less dreary and a team spirit is born that leads to greater productivity and better job (life) satisfaction. What will a wellness program cost the Company? Our experience show that a properly implemented wellness program returns 500% on the investment over a three year period, so we prefer not to use the word cost. We recommend beginning with an investment equal to the average workers daily pay rate per year, per eligible employee. For example: if the average salary of the employee is $45,000 per year, we would recommend an annual investment of $175. per eligible employee per year be spent on wellness, plus employee incentives of $100. |
